Domestic Violence: Recognizing the Signs & Finding Your Way to Safety

If you are in immediate danger, please call 911.

Domestic violence is one of the most misunderstood and underreported forms of harm. It doesn't always look like what we see in movies. It can be subtle, gradual, and deeply confusing — especially when it comes from someone you love. You are not alone, and what is happening to you is not your fault.

What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence (also called intimate partner violence) is a pattern of behavior used by one person to gain or maintain power and control over another in an intimate relationship. It can be:

  • Physical: Hitting, pushing, restraining, or any unwanted physical contact
  • Emotional/Psychological: Manipulation, gaslighting, humiliation, isolation, or constant criticism
  • Financial: Controlling access to money, employment, or resources
  • Sexual: Any sexual act without consent
  • Digital: Monitoring devices, controlling social media, or using technology to surveil or harass

Warning Signs

  • Your partner controls who you see, where you go, or what you wear
  • You feel afraid to disagree or express your feelings
  • You are blamed for your partner's behavior or emotions
  • You have been threatened, humiliated, or made to feel worthless
  • You feel isolated from friends and family

You Deserve Safety

Leaving an abusive relationship is complex and can be dangerous. Please reach out for support before making any moves. You don't have to do this alone.
